Why Sedation Dentistry?

What to Expect

Sedation dentistry is used to help patients relax and minimize their anxiety while going through various dental treatments and procedures. Sedation dentistry is the use of oral medications or conscious sedation (IV medications).

Before Treatment

Before you start a dental treatment, you and your dentist will decide whether or not you want to use sedation dentistry and what type of sedation dentistry is best for you. There are two types of dental sedation: conscious sedation, and oral sedation.

During Treatment

There are two types of dental sedation:

  • Mild sedation is the most common form, often given as nitrous oxide. It is used for routine dental work, implant placement, extractions, and cosmetic dentistry. This form of sedation is with the use of a gas (nitrous oxide) that is breathed in through a mask during your procedure.
  • Medium sedation is a heavier level of sedation used for more involved and intensive dental procedures. It is typically administered orally (pill form a few hours before the procedure) and can be used for most dental procedures. It can also be administered in the office through an IV (Intravenous conscious sedation).

With both types of dental sedation, you will still receive an anesthetic for your procedure once the sedation has started to work.

After Treatment

After having a dental procedure done with sedation, you will likely feel very drowsy. Driving after using the medium sedation dentistry option is not advised, so you will need a familiar person to transport you home.If you choose to use the form of mild sedation with nitrous oxide, you will not experience drowsiness afterward, so you will typically be able to drive yourself after your procedure.
